Last night I watched Argento's Deep Red (aka Profondo Rosso) . The artistic established camera shots in it makes this giallo film unique. There was a scene where the camera pans through several old children's toys and the way it was done (and the backing musical score) made it postively creepy.

So I just got done watching Cloverfield 10 minutes ago and I have to say the film has good points and bad points. The good points is that it tries to create this sense of terror from urban chaos due to some disaster. Some of the scenes were inspired directly from footage from the 9/11 attack (complete with people walking in a daze with ash all over them). The use of a camcorder to shoot everything made a typical monster movie feel more like a reality-based TV show. When the monster attacks you feel like you are running with the massive crowd. However, this strongest point in the film is also the weakest.I understand the director was shooting in a cinéma vérité style but he went to far with it. It was almost shaking and weaving the entire time. Thirty minutes into the film I felt motion sickness and had to look away from the film. The camcorder they were shooting with did have image stablization.
So to sum up the movie this is it:
(shake camera in circles)
"Oh my god! oh my god !!! did you see that ?!?!"
"Srrrrrrrrreacccch"
"What was that ? move move! "
(move camera left, right up and down )
"Scrrrrrrrrreaacch"
"BOOM! "
Give me Godzilla any day instead of this film. I won't get sick, I can laugh at the terrible overdubs, and Godzilla gets into fights with other monsters. I highly suggest anyone watching it to take dramamine if you are likely to get motion sickness.
